I’m going to be teaching a feather and fan scarf in a couple of weeks and I spent most of last night experimenting with different versions of the stitch, it was one of those things where I couldn’t go to bed until I felt I had what I wanted. Well, at 2 a.m. I went to bed anyway, and feather and fan followed… I dreamed of stitches.

i just did a scarf/stole pattern in feather and fan for curious creek fibers. you can see the pattern for free on their website (curiouscreek.com).

i am now very enamored of the stitch, particularly with contrasts of color or texture to really bring out the waves.

did you know another name for it is “old shale”? this, i gather, is meant to evoke the pattern of waves left in shaley sands on the beach which seems right on. the fans i can always see, the feathers, not so much.

also, check out what barbara walker calls “ostrich plumes” in her _second treasury_. it’s f&f, but with an offset every 4th repeat. really gorgeous and barely more difficult.
