Field Marshal FitzRoy James Henry Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan was is the namesake for the raglan sleeve. He lost an arm in battle and the sleeve design was created to accommodate his injury.

My dad–who’s a wealth of all sorts of trivia and historical facts, and who mentioned this tidbit to me in the first place–also feels it’s important to note that Lord Raglan was part of (and blundered in) The Charge of the Light Brigade, as well as the Battle of Waterloo.
